Inspired by Stefan Sagmeister, I created my own list.
On the morning of my 36th birthday, I went on a walk into the forest and wrote down 15 life lessons I’ve cultivated through my own lived experience.
- There is nothing to be gained by taking things personally.
- The quicker you learn to surrender to the things out of your control, the quicker you’ll be free.
- Most growth is at least a little uncomfortable.
- Learn to ask for help. Learn how to receive it.
- A quiet morning practice can slow down time and create a buffer between you and the world that wants to rush in.
- Have a practice for each:
• Nourishing the soul
• Expanding the mind
• Managing the nervous system
• Moving the physical body
- Appreciate people and tell them you love them. You don’t know when you might not get the chance.
- There is nothing wrong with moving slow.
- Ambition isn’t always a good thing.
- Finding beauty and divinity in the minutiae of life will be a constant source of joy and remind you of your place.
- Find a truth that touches you so deeply, your conviction in it is unshakeable. This will always be your North star, the way home to yourself.
- Know when it’s time to learn.
Know when it’s time to act.
Know when it’s time to rest.
- Never be afraid to ask for what you need, just don’t always expect you’ll receive it.
- Everything you’ll ever need to know is already hidden in your heart. You must learn how to heal it. Learn how to listen to it.
- The fight against your own ignorance is a full time job, but you will get better at it.
